Restaurants in Malta

Whether it’s a home-cooked rabbit stew you’re after or a fancy three-course meal, there’s definitely something out there to satisfy every craving!

Boasting an impressive selection of fine dining and casual establishments across the island, Malta is a food lover’s paradise. From local and Mediterranean cuisine to Asian and South American dishes, you can expect a culinary experience you won’t forget anytime soon.

Whether it’s a home-cooked rabbit stew you’re after or a fancy three-course meal, there’s definitely something out there to satisfy every craving!

Typical Maltese Restaurants

Locals are very proud of their traditions, one of which is the preparation and serving of typical Maltese dishes. If you’re looking for a superb rabbit special, you may want to visit Mgarr, a quaint little town home to some of Malta’s finest rabbit restaurants. ‘United Bar’ and ‘Ta’ Soldi’ are both highly-rated, as well as ‘Ta’L-Ingliz’ and ‘Il-Barri’, all located within close proximity of each other.  You may also find Charlies Inn, which is located in Salina and well know to many.
If you prefer fish, then Marsaxlokk is the place for you. This old-fashioned fishing village in the south of Malta has numerous seafood restaurants, including ‘Tartarun’, ‘Rizzu’ and ‘La Nostra Padrona’’ all three are well-known for their exquisite fresh fish dishes.

High-End Restaurants

If money isn’t an issue, then why not dine at one of Malta’s premier restaurants for an unforgettable night of delicious food?

‘Medina’ restaurant, located within Mdina’s ancient walls, is the current holder of the overall prize at the 2015 Malta Restaurant awards. The staff here pride themselves on their eye for presentation and ability to add their own twist to traditional Maltese dishes.

‘Tarragon’ ,in St Paul’s Bay, is another successful eastery that promises the highest quality fine dining experience, with some of Malta’s best surf & turf dishes and a mouth-watering dessert menu available.

Zeri’s and Aqua Terra are both excellent choice restaurants located in the Portomaso Marina in St. Julian’s. If you are for an exquisite meal with a fantastic back drop these two are highly recommended Mediterranean Restaurants.

If you happen to be visiting Malta’s beautiful sister island, Gozo, in search of a scrumptious lunch or dinner, then ‘Ta Frenc’ in Zebbug won’t disappoint. Equipped with their own herb garden and olive tree patch, customers can really taste the essence of the island thanks to the innovative à la carte menu.

Great Outings

There are a few dining places located in Valletta that are worth noting as well as visiting. Trabuxu, Da Pippo and Salvino’s are three restaurants which you will share an unique experience, from the evident chatter and droves of people coming and going, to the fabulous dishes that they offer.  Grab your partner and plan an afternoon to end your day at Charles Grech Wine Bar for a couple of after drinks.

If you are looking to have more of a casual but excellent meal, why don’t you head to Tigne Point where there is the Famous Fratelli la Bufala – try the “Taliata” of Bufala Beef or their great Pasta or Pizza.  Service is second to none and located in the Piaza Tigne where if you are with your kids you may watch them play whilst you enjoy a glass of wine.

Foreign Cuisine

Chefs and restauranteurs from across the globe have long since made Malta their home. There are ample Mediterranean-themed restaurants dotted around the island, serving the finest food from Italy, Sicily, Spain, Greece and beyond. Ethnic restaurants have also proven popular of late, with ‘Sharma’ in Mdina and ‘Shiva’s’ in St Julian’s widely-regarded as serving the island’s best Indian food, and with ‘La Mere’ in Valletta providing an interesting fusion of Indian, Arabic and Mediterranean cuisine made with love.

The Western World’s increasing demand for Asian food hasn’t past Malta by. Chinese eateries are common, ad Thai and Japanese eateries are also gaining popularity fast. ‘Okura’, in St Julian’s, boasts a huge variety of mouth-watering, well-presented sushi, while the “Zen” at Portomaso is the most established, ‘Wasabi Sushi Express’ has proved to be a hit in Valletta.
